“The business you’re praying for may require a version of you that God is still shaping.”
“Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way. A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.” — Proverbs 19:2-3
Starting a business is exciting. You have ideas, dreams, goals, and a vision for what could be. You want to provide for your family, create something meaningful, and experience the freedom that comes with building your own business.
But Proverbs 19 offers a timeless warning that every Christian entrepreneur needs to hear.
“Desire without knowledge is not good…”
There is nothing wrong with ambition. In fact, God often places dreams and desires in our hearts. The problem isn’t desire—it’s pursuing that desire without the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding required to steward it well.
Many entrepreneurs start businesses in industries they’ve never worked in. Others have incredible technical skills but little understanding of marketing, sales, finance, leadership, or business strategy. They expect passion alone to carry them to success.
It rarely does.
God designed growth to require learning.
When I started Unique Collaborations, building websites, I had only built a few websites previously for Janene and I. Lacking much wisdom and knowledge about the industry, yet I was excited about what God was calling me to do in business in this new season of life.
Beginning a business in a new industry, in a new city definitely had its challenges!
But here’s what I know about anything good…it starts somewhere. You just have to start. I’m not telling you to wait until you know everything about your craft or industry before you launch. That simply isn’t possible and you will be waiting a long time! But trust the Lord as you grow.
Knowledge Before Acceleration
The second half of Proverbs 19:2 says,
”…whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.”
When things aren’t working as quickly as we hoped, our natural response is often to move faster.
We launch another product.
We spend more money on advertising.
We chase another opportunity.
We change directions.
We compare ourselves to everyone else’s success.
We begin making decisions from pressure instead of wisdom.
The irony is that moving faster often slows us down.
Many of the obstacles we encounter aren’t signs that God has abandoned us. They’re opportunities to develop the knowledge, discipline, and character we’ll need later.
Sometimes we’re trying to skip lessons that God knows are essential before He entrusts us with greater responsibility.
Your Business Will Only Grow as Much as You Do
One of the greatest investments you’ll ever make isn’t in your website, your marketing, or your equipment.
It’s in yourself.
Successful entrepreneurs never stop learning.
They read.
They ask questions.
They seek wise counsel.
They invest in mentors.
They learn from failures.
They develop emotionally, spiritually, financially, and professionally.
The business often becomes a mirror, revealing weaknesses we didn’t know we had.
Maybe it’s impatience.
Maybe it’s poor communication.
Maybe it’s fear of selling.
Maybe it’s a lack of financial discipline.
Maybe it’s pride that keeps us from asking for help.
God can use every challenge in business to shape us into the person He’s calling us to become.
Because ultimately, He’s building more than a business.
He’s building you.
When Things Don’t Work Out
Proverbs 19:3 continues with a sobering observation:
“A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.”
This verse hits close to home.
When business isn’t growing…
When clients don’t come…
When money gets tight…
When plans fall apart…
It’s easy to question God.
“Lord, why aren’t You blessing this?”
“Why isn’t this working?”
“I thought You called me to do this.”
But sometimes the problem isn’t God’s faithfulness.
Sometimes we simply haven’t learned what we need to know yet.
That doesn’t mean every hardship is our fault. Business comes with challenges beyond our control. Markets change. Customers change. Unexpected setbacks happen.
But there are also things that are our responsibility.
God calls us to work diligently.
To pursue wisdom.
To seek knowledge.
To make wise decisions.
To steward well what He’s already placed in our hands.
His grace empowers us, but it doesn’t replace our responsibility.
There was a time when it seemed that everything had dried up and I was earnestly praying for a breakthrough. I hate to confess but I even remember saying like this to God “Lord, you called me to do this, now where did you go?! Where is your blessing?! Where is your help?!”
Just like this Proverbs says here I was acting like a foolish man, blaming God.
It wasn’t long before the season changed, I could hear Him clearly again, and there were lessons that came to me for things that I was really missing. Looking back, if God had poured the opportunities and business growth on me all at once it would have completely overwhelmed me. He knows what’s best. He knows the timing.
God’s Focus Is Different Than Ours
Many entrepreneurs are focused on one thing:
Putting food on the table.
And that’s understandable. Providing for our families matters deeply.
But God often has a much bigger perspective.
He’s thinking about the person you’ll become twenty years from now.
He’s developing integrity that can handle success.
He’s building humility that keeps you teachable.
He’s strengthening your faith so it isn’t dependent on circumstances.
He’s preparing you to lead people well.
He’s teaching you perseverance so you won’t quit when greater challenges come.
We usually pray for quick breakthroughs.
God often answers with steady transformation.
Because lasting success requires lasting character.
Trust God While You Grow
If you’re building a business today, don’t confuse a season of learning with a season of failure.
Don’t rush ahead of God’s process.
Keep learning.
Keep improving.
Keep seeking wisdom.
Keep asking questions.
Keep trusting the Lord one day at a time.
The business you’re praying for may require a version of you that God is still shaping.
And that’s not something to resent.
It’s something to embrace.
As you pursue excellence and continue growing in knowledge, remember that God is faithful. He will provide the grace, favor, and strength you need—but He also invites you into the process of becoming wiser, stronger, and more like Christ.
That’s a success no economic downturn can ever take away.
